Marianne Carlson of Jefferson proved she can make a pie crust as she won four ribbons in the Machine Shed pie contest at the Iowa State Fair. She also proved she’s the queen of what many folks call “cheater” crusts. She placed first and won a $200 gift card in the Best Healthy Pie with Keebler Crusts contest. The contest required the use of a Keebler pie crust or Keebler graham cracker crust. It was judged based on taste, appearance, and use of the crust.
Carlson also placed second in the muffin class of the Krusteaz Creations contest, which was judged based on taste, appearance and creativity.
The 4-H dog project is popular with Greene County youngsters, and three Greene County 4-H members of did very well exhibiting their skills in the 4-H dog show at the Iowa State Fair last Sunday. Judging was done in two divisions – obedience and handling.
Noelle Gray was selected as champion in Open A obedience. Samatha Hardaway was the champion in Intermediate handling, and Conner Allender was the reserve champion in Junior handling. All three girls are of Jefferson.
The Hampshire sheep show as held Thursday, Aug. 14. Hoskins Family Farms of Rippey showed the fourth place yearling ram.
A trio of Greene County sheep producers showed at the wether sire/dam sheep show Aug. 15. Wolf Club Lambs of Scranton placed as follows: black face ram heavier than 142.5 lbs, third and fifth places; black face yearling ewe, first place; black face ewe lamb 112.5 pounds and less, second and third places; black face ewe lamb 134-138.5 lbs, first and fifth places; and black face ewe lamb 145 lbs and heavier, fifth place.
Mason Burkett of Grand Junction placed as follows: black face ewe lamb 112.5 pounds and less, 11th and 12th places; black face ewe lamb 128-133 lbs, second place; and black face ewe lamb 145 lbs and heavier, 14th place.
Shahan Club Lambs of Jefferson showed the second place black face ewe lamb 139-144.5 lbs.
